Pitt ACT Competency Series

Have you taken advantage of the Pitt ACT Program: Advising and Mentoring Foundations Training? This online program provides standard resources for all advisors and mentors across the University. At Pitt, we are committed to helping advisors and mentors build networks, grow in the profession, refine skills, and advance professional development.

This semester, we will continue the Pitt ACT Competency Series that was launched in Fall 2021. The Pitt ACT modules were developed based on competency areas identified by the Workgroup on Advising Training and on the NACADA core competency model.

We are now offering a workshop series that aligns with the competencies where you can learn more about a specific topic and gather with fellow advisors and mentors in discussion. You do not have to be enrolled in the program to take advantage of the workshops.

Pitt ACT Competencies:

  • One: Advising at Pitt
  • Two: University Policy and Procedures
  • Three: Academic Programs and Requirements
  • Four: Technology for Student Success
  • Five: Campus Resources
  • Six: Advising Profession and Practice

This fall, the Student Success Team is exploring the possibility of a workshop series focused on different approaches used in academic advising. Those approaches include:

  1. Motivational Interviewing
  2. Appreciative Advising
  3. Proactive Advising

If you or someone you know currently utilizes one or more of these approaches, and would like to collaborate on a workshop in the fall, reach out to Jennifer Cooper at jlc321@pitt.edu

Conserving Your Energy to Better Serve Students: Strategies for Establishing Healthy Boundaries
May 29, 2024 at 1 p.m.
Pitt Act Competency Five: Campus Resources

Abstract: More students are entering college with at least one mental health concern. Students usually interact with their professors several times per week, and therefore may feel more comfortable reaching out to them with non-academic concerns. While it is important to support the holistic growth of students, establishing boundaries with students is essential to prevent faculty burnout. This workshop will review various types of boundaries and how stress may arise when boundaries are not clarified. Participants will be invited to explore their current boundaries and identify areas for needed adjustment. Strategies for creating boundaries will be shared.

Working Smarter not Harder: Leveraging Technology to Advise Today’s Student while Balancing Job Responsibilities
June 20, 2024 at 1 p.m.
Pitt Act Competency Four: Technology for Student Success

Abstract: Recently, higher education has seen a shift in the characteristics of students as Generation Z began attending college, and then, COVID-19 altered all our practices and routines. Because of this, student learning, needs, and expectations have changed, and in turn, advising practice has had to adapt while balancing our own responsibilities. The goal of this session is to provide advisors the space to examine newly observed trends in student behavior and learning. The presentation will provide examples and suggestions for adapting our practice to leverage technology and information to advise students effectively and efficiently.

Using Forms to Enhance Advising
July 17, 2024 at 1 p.m.
Pitt Act Competency Four: Technology for Student Success

Abstract: Keeping track of all the data on our students can be difficult, especially when our education management systems do not naturally track it. I developed a form that helps catalog multiple facets of the student's experience all while streamlining note-taking and allowing for quick caseload analysis. This workshop will cover setting up a custom system to meet your caseload needs.
